Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte became an early patron and bought several of his works. ¹ The artist painted the famous Boy Bitten by a Lizard for the Cardinal and his wealthy friends. ¹ In this painting, a young man pulls back in sudden pain as a lizard bites his finger. ²

You can see a tiny reflection of a room in the glass vase of that painting, which now hangs in the National Gallery in London. ² Caravaggio often used real, everyday people as models for his sacred scenes. His model and lover, Lena, even served as his model for the famous Madonna di Loreto. ¹ He also painted the striking John the Baptist (Reclining Baptist), showing the saint in a deeply human, relaxed pose.

Exile, Malta, and the Final Masterpieces

On May 29, 1606, he killed Ranuccio Tomassoni during a street fight, which led to a death sentence and forced him to flee Rome. ¹ He fled to Naples, where he painted for local churches. ¹ Later, he traveled to Malta in 1607, hoping the Grand Master could help him get a papal pardon. ¹

He traveled to Sicily, where he painted several dark, emotional scenes. ¹ To complete his famous resurrection scene, he even hired workmen to hold up a real, decaying corpse. ³ He died of a fever in 1610 while traveling to Rome. ¹ Before his death, he returned to Naples to paint his very last picture, The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula. ¹
