Vincent van Gogh and the Swirling Sky of Saint-Rémy
A dark, flame-like cypress tree rises in the foreground, stretching toward a swirling sky of deep blues and blazing yellows. This is the restless night Vincent van Gogh created from his memory. Eleven bright stars glow with yellow and white light. He wanted to capture the beauty of the darkness using vibrant color. [1]
Unlike his other canvases, Vincent van Gogh painted this scene from memory instead of outdoors. [2] He only spoke of The Starry Night twice in letters to Theo. [2] He even considered it a failure. [3] Yet, it remains one of the most celebrated oil canvases in art history.
From the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest to the Museum of Modern Art
The composition is split by a dark green and brown cypress tree on the left. This tree is traditionally associated with mourning and graveyards. [4] To its right, the planet Venus shines brightly. [3] In the middle lies a quiet village under dark rolling hills, with a tall church spire.
A single building has a red-orange roof, contrasting with the dark rooftops. Thick, heavy strokes of paint called impasto create a textured surface. This technique also brings life to his vibrant canvas of olive trees. The painting entered the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 1941. [3]
