Vincent van Gogh and the Impossible Sky of Ursa Major
Walk down the riverbank with Vincent van Gogh under a dome of deep blue and gold. In September 1888, the artist stood on the sandy shore to paint Starry Night Over the Rhone. [1] His work ranks among the finest masterpieces in history. The canvas captures a wide river under a glowing sky, with a tiny church spire visible on the distant shore.
Vincent van Gogh divided the scene into three balanced horizontal bands. The top third holds a vast sky, while the dark river fills the middle. At the bottom, the curving shore guides your eyes. He painted this just a short walk from his home, The Yellow House. [1] He used deep indigo and bright yellow to bring the night to life.
The artist was deeply obsessed with capturing the night sky during this productive year. [2] This work was part of a trio of night scenes, alongside his famous Cafe Terrace at Night. [2] He found beautiful inspiration by walking along the deserted shore. [2] Painting these stars satisfied a deep spiritual need for Vincent van Gogh. [2]
When you look closely, you will see how he played with reality. The scene looks southwest from Place Lamartine, but the Ursa Major constellation is painted there. [1] The Big Dipper is never actually visible in that direction. [1] Vincent van Gogh merged a northern sky with a southwest landscape. [1] The canvas was first exhibited at the Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1889 alongside Irises. [1] You can find more paintings by Van Gogh in our collection.
