Vincent van Gogh painted three bold sunflowers in a green ceramic vase. He painted five large canvases of sunflowers in a vase using three shades of yellow to show single-color variations. [1] The heavy flowers rest on a dark reddish-brown table against a turquoise background. Thick brushstrokes cover the canvas, giving the petals a heavy texture.
A careful viewer will spot tiny white dabs of paint on the green vase. These show bright light reflections on the shiny glaze. A single dark leaf points sharply upwards on the left side. The light shines from the front-left, illuminating the orange petals.
