The Light of Forgiveness in Rembrandt's Final Years
In Return of the Prodigal Son, Rembrandt shows us a quiet moment of forgiveness. A warm light highlights the father's hands and the kneeling son's bare foot. This oil painting on canvas is one of the most well-known paintings in the world. [1] Rembrandt finished this masterpiece within two years of his death. [1]
The Contrasting Hands in Saint Petersburg
The original is held at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. [1] Notice how the father's hands are painted differently to show maternal and paternal love. [1] The older brother stands on the right, representing judgment. [1] This tender scene differs from early baroque masterworks like Andromeda. Baroque is a dramatic style of art with strong light contrasts. It also stands apart from his portrait An Old Man in Military Costume.
