The Girl with Turban and the Mauritshuis of The Hague

In this beautiful oil on canvas, a young woman looks over her shoulder, her eyes meeting yours with a soft peach glow. She occupies the center of the frame against a dark background. Until 1995, this work was known simply as Girl with Turban. [1] She wears a blue turban wrapped around her head, with a long yellow-gold band hanging behind her shoulder.

A strong light source from the upper left illuminates her face, nose, and parted lips. Her gaze is direct and inviting. The dark background glaze is composed of bone black, weld, chalk, red ochre, and indigo. [2] Johannes Vermeer signed the canvas 'IVMeer' in the upper left with IVM in ligature, but he left it undated. [3] [2]

[4] The dense yellowish ground contains chalk, lead white, ochre, and minimal black. [2] Yet the jewel in her ear is actually a glass, lacquered drop earring rather than a real pearl. [1]

To render this ornament, Johannes Vermeer used only two strokes: a bright highlight and a soft collar reflection. [3] A network of fine cracks, called craquelure, covers the entire painted surface.
