The Bold Vision of Gustave Courbet in 1866
In 1866, the Ottoman diplomat Halil Şerif Pasha, also known as Khalil Bey, commissioned a private artwork from the French master [f:2, f:4]. Gustave Courbet chose to paint using oil paint on canvas. [1] He created a scene that bypassed the usual myths and allegories of his day. What it shows is a tight, centered close-up focusing on the female groin. A naked woman is cropped to show only her torso, a single breast, belly, groin, and upper thighs. She reclines on her back with her thighs parted, resting on white sheets.
Gustave Courbet was a pioneer of the realist movement, and his reproductions in the style of Realism always stayed true to life. In this painting, he did not soften the details. A single reddish-pink nipple is visible at the top edge of the frame. A small, shallow navel is visible in the upper center of the abdomen. The rest of her body remains entirely cropped out. He used pale beige, warm cream, and dark brown colors to render her skin under a soft light from the right. Smooth, blended brushwork on the skin suggests soft texture, while textured strokes define the white fabric and pubic hair.
From Baron Ferenc Hatvany to the Musée d'Orsay
The painting spent decades hidden in private collections, shielded from the public eye. During the chaotic end of WWII, Soviet troops looted the painting from the collection of Baron Ferenc Hatvany in Hungary. [2] It was later ransomed. [2] In 1955, the famous psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan purchased the work at auction for 1.5 million francs. [2] Lacan kept it hidden behind another canvas in his country home.
Today, the work resides in the permanent collection of the Musée d'Orsay. [1] Its modern influence remains massive; a French court even ruled against Facebook for closing a user's account over posting the painting, leading to a policy adjustment allowing nudity in art. [2]
