Gustave Courbet Oil Painting Reproductions

From Ornans to the Paris Salon: The Rebel of Realism

Gustave Courbet was born on June 10, 1819, in Ornans, France ¹. He moved to Paris in 1839 and briefly worked at the studio of Steuben and Hesse ¹. Instead of following strict academic rules, Courbet developed his own style by studying and copying the works of Spanish, Flemish, and French masters in the Louvre ¹. He wanted to paint the world exactly as he saw it, without sweetening the truth.

His approach quickly shook up the French art world. Courbet achieved his first Salon success in 1849 with After Dinner at Ornans, which won a gold medal and was bought by the state ¹. That same year, his painting The Stone Breakers was inspired by two men he saw performing backbreaking labor on the roadside in Ornans ¹. Sadly, this masterpiece was destroyed during World War II when a transport vehicle moving it was bombed by Allied forces in 1945 ¹.

Courbet constantly challenged the authorities. His massive canvas A Burial at Ornans drew fierce criticism because it depicted a common, prosaic ritual on a massive scale traditionally reserved for grand historical or religious subjects ¹. In 1855, after his major works were rejected by the Exposition Universelle, Courbet built his own temporary gallery called "The Pavilion of Realism" to display forty of his paintings ¹. He even hid political messages in his art. X-rays of The Artist's Studio reveal that Courbet later added a figure representing French Emperor Napoleon III on the left side of the canvas to show his disdain ¹.

Imprisonment, Exile, and the Quiet Still Lifes

Courbet's political beliefs eventually cost him his freedom. In 1870, Courbet refused a nomination to the French Legion of Honour to declare his independence from any government ². During the short-lived Paris Commune of 1871, he served as a delegate and organized a Federation of Artists ¹. When the Commune fell, he was held responsible for the destruction of a famous monument. Courbet was imprisoned for six months and ordered to pay the reconstruction costs for his role in the demolition of the Vendôme Column ².

While serving his prison sentence in Sainte-Pélagie, Courbet was allowed to paint but could not use models ¹. This restriction led him to paint a series of still lifes of flowers and fruit ¹. You can see this quiet focus in Hollyhocks in a Copper Bowl, where the rich textures of the petals feel incredibly alive. To avoid bankruptcy from the massive cost of rebuilding the Vendôme Column, Courbet went into exile in Switzerland in 1873 ².
