Frequently Asked Questions

What defines Rococo art?

Rococo art is defined by its light, playful, and highly decorative style. It often features soft pastel colors, delicate brushstrokes, and themes of love, nature, and country life. The style eventually passed out of fashion in France by 1785 and was replaced by Neoclassicism.

What is the difference between Baroque and Rococo art?

Baroque art is highly dramatic, solemn, and grand, often used to show power. Rococo art was born as a reaction against this heavy style. Later, during the French Revolution, Rococo painting fell into disrepute and was accused of being superficial, frivolous, and immoral.

What does Rococo mean in French?

The word rococo is a satirical derivation of the French word rocaille, which refers to rock and shell decorations. It was coined by the Neoclassical painter Pierre-Maurice Quays. The word first appeared in print in 1825 as a negative term used by critics.

The Birth of Rococo Artworks in Paris

This collection brings together 1800 hand-painted oil reproductions of the Rococo movement, allowing you to own a piece of this light-filled era. Rococo painting was born in Paris around the 1700s as a reaction against the solemn Baroque style of Louis XIV's period. 1 Baroque was a highly ornate and dramatic style of art. The Rococo style emerged in France in the 1730s as a lighter, more playful Western style of architecture, art, and decoration. 2

French Rococo flourished in Paris between about 1723 and 1759. 2 Painters like Antoine Watteau led this shift, painting works like The Embarkation for Cythera in 1717 to show young nobles in pastoral settings. 2 A pastoral setting is a peaceful scene of country life. These rococo artworks replaced heavy, dark themes with soft colors, light brushstrokes, and playful scenes of love and nature.

From Versailles to the English Countryside

The movement quickly spread across Europe. In France, François Lemoyne painted the ceiling of the Salon of Hercules at the Palace of Versailles, completing it in 1735. 2 François Boucher painted The Toilet of Venus in 1746, which became a famous example of the style. 2 William Hogarth founded the St Martin's Lane Academy in 1735, introducing the style to England. 2

Rococo flourished in England between 1740 and 1770. 2 English artists brought a unique touch to the style. You can see this in William Hogarth's witty Satire on False Perspective. It shows how English painters used Rococo's lighthearted spirit to poke fun at formal rules.

The style also traveled east, reaching its summit in southern Germany and Austria from the 1730s until the 1770s. 2 Giovanni Battista Tiepolo decorated the ceilings of the Würzburg Residence in Germany from 1750 to 1753. 2 Empress Elisabeth and Catherine the Great also introduced the Russian Rococo style during the eighteenth century. 2

Choosing Your Rococo Masterpiece for Your Wall

When selecting a painting for your home, consider the mood of the room. For a grand, classic look, you might choose a portrait by Thomas Gainsborough. His painting William Poyntz of Midgham and his Dog Amber captures the elegant, natural style of the English gentry.

If you prefer a bold, historic portrait, Lemuel Francis Abbott's Rear-admiral Sir Horatio Nelson offers a striking focal point. For a softer, romantic feel, the works of Jean-Honoré Fragonard bring warmth and intimacy to any living space. Many of these artists are featured in our one hundred most famous canvases of all time.

Sizing Your Rococo Reproduction for Your Home

Every painting in this collection is hand-painted in oil on museum-grade linen, brushstroke by brushstroke, by a skilled studio artist. Prices start from $249.95, depending on the size. Seven sizes are listed for each work, and framing is optional. You can order any size or the original proportion through our custom canvas order page.
