These rococo artworks replaced heavy, dark themes with soft colors, light brushstrokes, and playful scenes of love and nature.

From Versailles to the English Countryside

The movement quickly spread across Europe. In France, François Lemoyne painted the ceiling of the Salon of Hercules at the Palace of Versailles, completing it in 1735. 2 François Boucher painted The Toilet of Venus in 1746, which became a famous example of the style. 2 William Hogarth founded the St Martin's Lane Academy in 1735, introducing the style to England. 2

Rococo flourished in England between 1740 and 1770. 2 English artists brought a unique touch to the style. You can see this in William Hogarth's witty Satire on False Perspective. It shows how English painters used Rococo's lighthearted spirit to poke fun at formal rules.

The style also traveled east, reaching its summit in southern Germany and Austria from the 1730s until the 1770s. 2 Giovanni Battista Tiepolo decorated the ceilings of the Würzburg Residence in Germany from 1750 to 1753. 2 Empress Elisabeth and Catherine the Great also introduced the Russian Rococo style during the eighteenth century. 2
