Jean-Honore Fragonard Oil Painting Reproductions

The Luminous Rococo World of Jean-Honoré Fragonard

Jean-Honoré Fragonard was born in Grasse, France, on April 5, 1732. ¹ His family moved to Paris in 1738, placing him at the heart of the French art world. ¹ He studied briefly with Jean-Siméon Chardin before returning to François Boucher around 1749, where he absorbed the lighthearted, decorative style that would define his career. ¹

Fragonard won the Prix de Rome in 1752 with his painting Jeroboam Sacrificing to Idols. ¹ Before leaving for Rome, he painted Christ washing the Feet of the Apostles, which is now in Grasse Cathedral. ¹ He moved into the French Academy in Rome in December 1756, beginning a transformative period of study. ¹

While in Italy, Fragonard learned to admire and copy the loose brushstrokes of Dutch and Flemish masters like Rubens, Hals, Rembrandt, and Ruisdael. ¹ He was also deeply impressed by the works of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, which he studied in Venice before returning to Paris in 1761. ¹ He was admitted to the Academy in 1765 after painting Coresus Sacrificing Himself to Save Callirhoe. ¹

Private Patrons and the Shift in Style

Fragonard painted mostly for private patrons or for himself because he struggled to complete official commissions. ¹ This freedom allowed him to develop a highly personal, expressive style. However, as tastes changed, Fragonard abandoned the Rococo style and experimented with Neoclassicism after his ambitious works received a lukewarm response. ¹

In October 1773, Fragonard traveled to Italy again with Pierre-Jacques Onézyme Bergeret de Grancourt and his son. ¹ His influence lingered long after; T.S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land describes a carved dolphin and cupids from Fragonard's painting Progress of Love: The Pursuit. ¹

In 1778, Marguerite Gérard, the sister of Fragonard's wife, became his student and assistant in Paris. ¹ The French Revolution took away Fragonard's private patrons, who were either guillotined or exiled. ¹ Fragonard left Paris in 1790 and decorated his cousin's house in Grasse with a series of decorative panels. ¹ He was so completely ignored after his death that an 1873 art history book by Wilhelm Lübke did not even mention his name. ¹ Today, his works are celebrated worldwide; The Bathers is located in the Louvre museum in Paris, and A Young Girl Reading is kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. ¹¹
