A display of five landscapes in a New York bookstore window in 1825 gained him the attention of prominent figures like John Trumbull. ¹ Trumbull bought one of Cole's paintings and introduced him to wealthy patrons who became important supporters. ¹ Cole later mentored the next generation of American landscape artists, including Frederic Edwin Church and Asher Brown Durand. ²
