Thomas Cole Oil Painting Reproductions

From the Catskill Mountains to the Hudson River School

This collection brings the dramatic landscapes of Thomas Cole into your home through hand-painted oil reproductions. Cole was an Anglo-American artist who founded the Hudson River School art movement. ¹ He was largely self-taught as a painter, relying on books and studying the work of other artists. ¹ In 1825, Cole moved to Catskill, New York, where he lived until his death in 1848. ¹

A display of five landscapes in a New York bookstore window in 1825 gained him the attention of prominent figures like John Trumbull. ¹ Trumbull bought one of Cole's paintings and introduced him to wealthy patrons who became important supporters. ¹ Cole later mentored the next generation of American landscape artists, including Frederic Edwin Church and Asher Brown Durand. ²

During his travels in England, Cole studied museum collections and met landscape painters J. M. W. Turner and John Constable. ² You can see this influence in our Romantic art collection. If you love this dramatic style, you might also enjoy Turner's landscape reproductions or Goya's dramatic works which capture similar emotional intensity.
