From The Hague to the Court of Bruges

Jan van Eyck worked in The Hague around 1422 as a painter for John III, the ruler of Holland and Hainaut ¹. After John's death in 1425, he became the court painter for Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and moved to Bruges in 1429 ¹. In 1428, he traveled to Portugal to paint Isabella of Portugal ². He died on July 9, 1441, in Bruges ¹.

Masterpieces of Saint Bavo and the National Gallery

Jan van Eyck's brother, Hubert van Eyck, began the Ghent Altarpiece, and Jan completed it in 1432 ¹. The Ghent Altarpiece was consecrated on May 6, 1432, at Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent ¹. In the 1432 Ghent Altarpiece, Mary is shown dressed as a bride, reading from a green-draped book ¹. The arched throne above Mary features lettering from the Book of Wisdom ¹.

You can choose the detailed Adoration of the Lamb detail or the Ghent Altarpiece (exterior) for your wall. The Arnolfini Portrait, painted in 1434, is housed in the National Gallery in London ¹. It likely depicts an Italian merchant named Giovanni di Nicolao di Arnolfini and his wife ². This work is featured on our one hundred most famous paintings list.

Jan van Eyck was the only Netherlandish painter of the 15th century who signed his panels ¹. He signed the Arnolfini Portrait with a phrase translating to "Jan van Eyck was here 1434" ¹. He also painted several male subjects with a light stubble, including Niccolò Albergati in 1431 ¹.

The years between 1434 and 1436 are considered Jan van Eyck's high point, during which he painted the Lucca Madonna and the Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele ¹. In the Lucca Madonna, he represented a heavenly throne inside a domestic chamber ¹.

An inscription on the Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele shows that Joris van der Paele commissioned the work in 1434 ¹. The Canon is shown reflecting on his bible ¹. You can bring this sacred scene home with our reproduction of the Virgin and Child with Saints and Donor.
