Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres painted a vision of luxury. The original 1814 The Grande Odalisque is located in the Musée du Louvre in Paris. [1] The Met holds an unfinished repetition in grisaille, or shades of gray, that is reduced in size and simplified. [1]
When the original Louvre painting was exhibited at the 1819 Salon, critics reacted with hostility over anatomical distortions. [1] Critics complained that the figure's body was radically elongated, famously claiming she had three excess vertebrae. [1] Yet, this deliberate distortion is exactly what makes the figure look so graceful and fluid.
Cool Textures and Deep Shadows
The composition stretches horizontally, guided by the long curve of the woman’s back. A heavy blue satin curtain on the right balances the bed. To the left, she rests on mustard yellow bedsheets and a crumpled white silk cloth. Soft, even light enters from the left, highlighting her skin, gold bangles, and a jeweled buckle against deep shadows.
