Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and the Dawn of 1642
A wooden drum beats on the far right as Captain Frans Banninck Cocq steps forward, ordering his lieutenant to march. [1] [2] Rembrandt completed this massive masterpiece in 1642. [1] The painting shows a dynamic group of seventeenth-century guardsmen leaving a dark hallway. Diagonal spears and a yellow and dark green striped flag create a restless sense of movement.
Strong light enters from the upper left, highlighting the girl in gold and casting the captain's hand shadow across his lieutenant. [3] The yellow and blue accents of their uniforms reflect their guild's coat of arms. [4] Their poses were modeled on a 1608 arms manual. [4] Rembrandt painted this scene with incredibly thick paint on the highlights.
