An elderly, muscular Socrates sits upright on his bed, gesturing toward the heavens while reaching for a cup of poison. The narrative tension lives in the small gap between his hand and the hemlock. The original version of The Death of Socrates (known in French as La Mort de Socrate) from 1787 hangs in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. [2] Rather than a royal commission, Jacques-Louis David completed this masterpiece for a private patron in 1786. [2] Today, it stands as a peak of neoclassical style paintings, featuring smooth, precise brushwork with invisible strokes.
