J.M.W. Turner and the Fiery Sunset of the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1839
A pale, ghostly warship glides across calm waters under a blazing sky in The Fighting Temeraire. The English artist Joseph Mallord William Turner painted this scene in 1838. The massive three-masted sailing ship rises on the left, painted in gold and white. A small, dark steam tugboat pulls her forward, puffing dark orange-brown smoke. In reality, Turner used artistic licence. [1] The real ship had its masts and rigging removed before the journey. [1] The ship was also towed by two tugboats in real life. [1]
By painting just one tugboat and full masts, Joseph Mallord William Turner created a poetic image of a dying era. A tiny white flag flies on the tugboat mast, and a white-sailed boat floats nearby. Faint silhouettes of shipping vessels line the far-right horizon. He loved this piece so much that he refused to sell it for £5,000 in 1848. [1]
