Joseph Mallord William Turner, known in his own time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter who lived from 1775 to 1851. He elevated the status of landscape painting, is considered a precursor of Impressionism, and counts among the greatest and most influential British painters. This canvas, painted in 1838 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1839, carries the full title The Fighting Temeraire, tugged to her last berth to be broken up, 1838, which is both the title and the whole subject.
