About This Painting

Haystacks is the common English title for a series of impressionist paintings by Claude Monet. The principal subject of each painting in the series is stacks of harvested wheat, and the title refers primarily to a twenty-five canvas series that Monet began near the end of the summer of 1890 and continued through the following spring. Our reproduction is painted by hand in oil on canvas, not printed.

About Haystacks

Monet also produced five earlier paintings using the same stack subject, and a precursor to the series is the 1884 Haystack Near Giverny, so the group is both larger and older than the twenty-five canvases the title usually names. Monet founded Impressionism and is seen as a key precursor to modernism for his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it, most of all in plein air landscape painting made outdoors in front of the subject. Stacks of harvested wheat, painted again and again from the end of the summer of 1890 into the following spring, are the clearest case of that method anywhere in his work. Because this is a series, the studio confirms which canvas you mean before painting it in oil on canvas by hand at the size you choose.

Sizes and framing

Every reproduction of Haystacks is made in seven sizes, so you can match the wall you already have in mind, and a frame is optional on each one. A studio artist paints the oil painting by hand, working from the original composition rather than from a machine. Before your piece is packed we send you a photograph of it and wait for your approval, so no work of art ships that you have not seen. Worldwide shipping is free, and you have 90 days to return the painting if it does not suit the room.
