About This Painting
Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog is a painting made by the German Romanticist artist Caspar David Friedrich in 1818. It shows a man standing on a rocky precipice with his back to the viewer, gazing out over a landscape covered in a thick sea of fog, through which other ridges, trees and mountains pierce as the view stretches into the distance. Our reproduction is painted by hand in oil on canvas, not printed.
About Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog
Caspar David Friedrich lived from 1774 to 1840 and is generally considered the most important German artist of his generation. His landscapes are often symbolic and anti-classical, and they carry a subjective, emotional response to the natural world. Friedrich liked to set contemplative human figures against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins, and the art historian Christopher John Murray described those figures, small in diminished perspective amid expansive landscapes, as directing the viewer's gaze toward their metaphysical dimension. The wanderer of 1818 is the clearest case of that method: one man, seen from behind, on a rocky precipice above an endless sea of fog. Because the figure faces away, the viewer is placed in his position rather than opposite him.
