The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the paintings it left
This collection gathers hand-painted oil reproductions of Pre-Raphaelite paintings by the painters of the Brotherhood and the artists who carried its look forward. The group began as a secret society of young artists, founded in London in 1848, with William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti as its principal members 1.
They opposed the Royal Academy's promotion of the ideal, as seen in Raphael, and the trivial genre scenes that sold so well at the time. They wanted serious subjects painted with as much realism as possible: first religious themes, then literature and poetry, often about love and death 1. John Ruskin's advice to "go to nature" shaped how closely they painted water, plants and cloth 1.
The works people come for
Millais painted Ophelia in 1851–2, and Rossetti finished Proserpine in 1874 1. Rossetti's Beata Beatrix belongs to the second phase that grew around his work after about 1860 and fed into Symbolism 1.
Edward Burne-Jones, one of the last Pre-Raphaelites, painted The Golden Stairs, and John William Waterhouse kept the style alive into the 1880s with The Lady of Shalott of 1888 1. You can see where these canvases sit among the most famous paintings in the world.
Choosing a Pre-Raphaelite painting
Every reproduction is painted by hand in oil on canvas, not printed. Seven sizes are listed for each work, with or without a frame, and you can ask for a custom size. We send a photo of the finished canvas for your approval before shipping. Prices start from $350.
