While he painted many masterpieces, his series of water lilies is widely considered his most famous work. Another incredibly famous work is Impression, Sunrise, which gave the Impressionist movement its name.
What is the name of Claude Monet's art style?
His style is called Impressionism. This style focuses on capturing the immediate impression of a scene, especially the effects of light and color. The term itself was coined by a critic in a hostile review of Monet's painting, Impression, Sunrise.
What are three of Claude Monet's most famous artworks?
Three of his most famous works are Impression, Sunrise, which he painted in the early 1870s, The Japanese Bridge, which he first exhibited in 1900, and his extensive series of water lilies.
Bringing Claude Monet's Light Into Your Living Space
This collection brings together 201 of Claude Monet's most breathtaking works, ready to be hand-painted in oil on museum-grade linen, brushstroke by brushstroke, for your home. When you choose a piece of monet artwork, you are choosing how light enters your room. Each canvas captures a fleeting moment of French sunshine, shifting shadows, or morning mist.
Claude Monet was born in Paris, France, on November 14, 1840. 1 His family moved to Le Havre in Normandy in 1845, where the sea and sky first captured his imagination. 1 Around 1858, Monet met Eugène Boudin, who taught him the outdoor painting approach. 1 This revolutionary method of painting in the open air, rather than inside a dark studio, changed his life.
After a brief pause when Monet enlisted for seven years with the 1st Regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique in April 1861, he returned to his true calling. 1 He returned to Paris in December 1862 and enrolled in Charles Gleyre's studio. 1 There, he began to develop the loose, rapid brushstrokes that would soon define a new era of art.
From the Normandy Coast to the Birth of Impressionism
Monet debuted at the Paris Salon in 1865 with two paintings that received large praise. 1 He married Camille Doncieux on June 28, 1870, just before the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. 1 During the war, Monet and his family lived in London and the Netherlands to avoid conscription. 1 There, Monet met the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who became his primary dealer. 1
Monet and his family moved to Argenteuil in 1871, where he mostly painted the surrounding area of the Seine. 1 Soon after, he painted his most famous early masterpiece. The term "Impressionism" was coined by art critic Louis Leroy in a hostile review of Monet's painting, Impression, Sunrise. 1 Today, you can hang a recreation of Impression, Sunrise.
This masterpiece, which is housed in the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, gave a name to a whole movement. 1 If you love this style, you can explore our wider collection of the Impressionism style. Monet worked alongside other masters of light, and you can also find beautiful works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas in our catalog.
The Giverny Years and the Water Lilies
In the autumn of 1878, Monet and his family moved to Vétheuil, sharing a house with the family of Ernest Hoschedé. 1 In April 1883, Monet moved to Giverny, which became his family's permanent home. 1 He traveled to Italy in December 1883 and spent nearly three months in Bordighera in early 1884. 1 He married Alice Hoschedé in 1892. 1
In Giverny, Monet created a water garden that would inspire his final decades. In 1899, Monet began painting the water lilies, which became his last and most ambitious sequence of paintings. 1 He exhibited his first group of garden pictures, focused on his Japanese bridge, in 1900. 1 You can bring this lush sanctuary home with The Japanese Bridge.
Even as he tended his garden, Monet continued to travel for his art. During his stays in London between 1899 and 1901, Monet painted Waterloo Bridge, Charing Cross Bridge, and the Houses of Parliament. 1 He visited Venice in the autumn of 1908, creating 37 paintings of the city. 1 These travels produced some of the most famous paintings of all time.
Monet's Masterpieces of Light and Water
Monet's late works show his deep obsession with his garden. His famous Water Lilies series captures the shifting reflections of clouds and sky on the water's surface. Later, in the 1920s, he painted The Rose Path, Giverny, which shows a path arched with climbing roses. These late paintings are among the most celebrated in the world, and you can find them in our list of the hundred most famous paintings.
He also painted series of the same subject at different times of day. He painted the facade of Rouen Cathedral and the poplars along the Epte River to show how light changes everything. By hanging one of these recreations, you can enjoy that same study of light in your own home.
Choosing the Right Size for Your Wall
Deciding which piece of monet artwork to hang is a personal journey. To bring a sense of peaceful nature into a bedroom or study, you might prefer the quiet, green tones of The Iris Garden at Giverny.
To make sure the painting fits your space perfectly, we offer several options. Seven sizes are listed for each work, and you can easily find a size that matches your wall. If you want to match the exact proportions of the original canvas, you can commission any size through our custom-order page. Prices in this collection start at $249.95, depending on the size you choose.
