Reproduction Methods

The ways a painting gets reproduced, and what separates a hand painted canvas from a print.

    About these guides

There is more than one way to copy a painting, and the differences are easy to miss in a photograph online. These guides walk through the methods in use today: giclee and other high resolution prints, transfers onto textured canvas, and reproduction by hand in oil, which is the one we do. You will find what each method can and cannot capture, where the cost goes, and why brushwork and impasto behave so differently from ink. If you are comparing sellers, this is the section that tells you what questions to ask. Our own process is simple to describe. An artist paints your chosen work in oil, at the size you order, and we send you a photograph of the result before anything ships. The canvas travels rolled in a tube with a certificate of authenticity.
