Pieter Bruegel the Elder and the Roman Coliseum Design
Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted a version of The Tower of Babel circa 1568 depicting Noah's descendants trying to reach heaven. [1] The giant Nimrod is shown in the bottom-left corner next to stonemasons. [2] These stonecutters in simple tunics kneel on the grass before the king. This masterpiece is one of the most remarkable artworks from the Northern Renaissance style.
The design of the Tower was modeled after the Roman Coliseum. [2] Pieter Bruegel the Elder visited Italy and France on a study voyage shortly after 1550. [1] He is believed to have painted a now-lost miniature version of the Tower of Babel on ivory in Rome. [1]

[1] The banker Niclaes Jonghelinck owned this painting inside his suburban villa Ter Beke in 1565.
