Willy Lott’s Cottage and the English Countryside

Two men guide a wooden wagon across the shallow River Stour near Willy Lott’s Cottage. [1] A small black and white dog watches from the bank under a dramatic, overcast sky. John Constable painted his childhood home with deep devotion. His father, Golding, was an affluent corn merchant who owned the mill at Flatford. [2] He showed the canvas at the Royal Academy under the title Landscape: Noon. [1]

From the Paris Salon of 1824 to the National Gallery

During his lifetime, John Constable faced strong buying resistance from the public. [3] However, his fortunes changed when this painting won a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1824. [1] This followed his first major success with The White Horse in 1819. [2] Henry Vaughan later purchased the masterpiece. [1] He presented it to the National Gallery in London. [1] Today, it remains on display in room 34. [4]
