The Lost Masterpiece of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

In The Concert, Johannes Vermeer invites us into a quiet, sunlit Dutch room. We see three musicians: a young woman at a harpsichord, a man playing a lute, and a singing woman. [1] Sadly, you cannot see the original today. The Concert was stolen on March 18, 1990, from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. [1] Today, empty frames remain hanging there as placeholders for the stolen art. [2]

The Baroque Style of Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic middle-class interior genre scenes of everyday life. [3] He painted in the Baroque period, using dramatic light. Double shadows on the background wall point to two open windows in his studio. [4] You can find similar works in our collection of the Baroque tradition. The Hidden Floor Tiles and Instruments

The black-and-white checkered floor tiles lead your eye through the room. Vermeer structured these black-and-white marble tiles by adapting and doubling the size of smaller ceramic tiles from his domestic residence. [4] A large stringed instrument lies on the floor next to a bow. A small stringed instrument lies partly obscured on the table under the carpet.
