A bare-breasted woman arches her back against a dark background in Edvard Munch's Madonna. Her eyes are closed, her head is tilted back, and her long dark hair cascades over her shoulders. [1] A crimson red halo glows behind her head instead of a gold one. [1] Red-pink dabs mark her nipples and navel, while pale skin stands out.

The title suggests the Virgin Mary, but the artwork communicates intense passion. Munch exhibited this canvas in Leipzig in 1903 as part of his Frieze of Life. [2] It hung right alongside Ashes. [2] It was eventually donated to the National Gallery of Norway in 1909. [2]
