Our Commitment

At Art & See, we take copyright laws seriously and operate fully within international intellectual property rights frameworks. Every artwork reproduced in our catalog is in the public domain — meaning the original copyright has expired and the work is legally free to reproduce, sell, and distribute worldwide.

Public Domain Status

Under international copyright law, including the Berne Convention, artworks enter the public domain 70 years after the death of the original artist (and longer in some jurisdictions). Our catalog is carefully curated to include only works that have passed this threshold.

All artists represented in our reproductions — including Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Gustav Klimt, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and others — are historical masters whose works are unambiguously in the public domain in the United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and all countries that follow the life-of-the-author-plus-70-years standard.

Legal Basis for Reproductions

Under U.S. law, faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public-domain artworks do not generate a new copyright, as established in Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. (1999). This means hand-painted reproductions of public-domain masterpieces are fully legal to create, sell, and distribute.

This is the same legal basis under which major museums — including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, the National Gallery, the Rijksmuseum, and the Uffizi — sell hand-painted and printed reproductions in their gift shops and online stores.

Our Image Database

Our catalog contains over 33,000 curated images of public-domain artworks, sourced from verified public-domain archives and institutional databases. If you believe any image in our catalog has been misclassified, please contact us immediately at [email protected] and we will review the work and, if necessary, remove it promptly.

Custom Orders

For custom orders based on customer-supplied images, clients are required to certify that they hold the right to reproduce the submitted image — either because it is in the public domain, because it falls within fair use provisions, or because they hold explicit permission from the rights holder.

By submitting a custom order, the customer grants Art & See the right to reproduce the provided image for the purpose of creating the commissioned artwork. Responsibility for ensuring the copyright status of customer-supplied images remains with the customer.

Nature of Our Reproductions

Art & See reproductions are hand-painted interpretations of public-domain masterpieces, created by trained artists in our studio. They are not photographic or mechanical reproductions and will naturally differ from the originals in details such as brushstrokes, dimensions, signature, surface texture, and subtle tonal variations. Each piece is an original act of craftsmanship based on a public-domain source work.
