Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any Rembrandts in the US?

Yes, there are many. The United States actually has the largest number of Rembrandt's paintings, with a total of 86 works.

Where can I find Rembrandt paintings?

You can find original Rembrandt paintings in major museums around the world. For example, his famous painting The Jewish Bride is housed in the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands.

Bringing Rembrandt and the Dutch Baroque Into Your Home

This collection holds 192 hand-painted oil reproductions of Rembrandt, the master of the Dutch Baroque style. You can have these works painted for your own walls. If you want to buy rembrandt paintings, you are choosing between two distinct eras of his life. He used tenebrism, which means using sharp contrasts between shadow and light. This technique was also used by Caravaggio and refined by Johannes Vermeer.

From Leiden to the Grand Houses of Amsterdam

Rembrandt began in his hometown. He was apprenticed to Jacob van Swanenburg in Leiden for three years starting around 1620. 1 He then studied for six months in Amsterdam under Pieter Lastman. 1 In 1625, Rembrandt opened a studio in Leiden, sharing it with Jan Lievens. 1

His talent caught the eye of powerful people. In 1629, Constantijn Huygens discovered Rembrandt and secured important commissions for him from the court of The Hague. 1 At the end of 1631, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, working as a highly successful professional portrait painter. 1 He married Saskia van Uylenburgh in 1634. 1

They moved to a house in the upscale Breestraat in May 1639, which later caused him financial difficulties. 1 Rembrandt frequently used his Jewish neighbors as models for his Hebrew Bible scenes. 1 His wife Saskia died in 1642, and his drawings of her on her sickbed are among his most moving works. 1

The Rough Brushstrokes of the 1650s and 1660s

Rembrandt's style changed from a smooth manner in his early years to a rough treatment of paint surfaces in his later years. 1 In the 1650s, his style changed to feature richer colors, more pronounced brush strokes, and harsher light. 1 This rough texture makes his late works feel incredibly alive on a wall.

Hard times followed. In July 1656, Rembrandt declared insolvency and willingly surrendered his assets. 1 By February 1658, his house was sold at a foreclosure auction, and his family moved to Rozengracht. 1 In 1660, Hendrickje Stoffels and his son Titus set up a dummy corporation as art dealers to let him keep painting. 1

In 1661, Rembrandt was contracted for a major project at the new town hall, but his painting was rejected by the mayors. 1 He died on October 4, 1669, and was buried in a rented grave in the Westerkerk. 1 His late masterpiece, the Syndics of the Drapers' Guild, was painted in 1662. 1

Hanging The Storm on the Sea of Galilee and Other Masterpieces

When choosing a piece, consider where the light falls in your room. You might choose The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, which is Rembrandt's only known seascape and has been missing since a museum robbery in 1990. 1 This dramatic scene is one of our iconic oil paintings.

For a strong focal point, you can hang Moses Smashing the Tablets of the Law. If you prefer a quiet mood, look at his Self-portrait in at the Age of 63. Each reproduction is hand-painted in oil on museum-grade linen, brushstroke by brushstroke, capturing the deep shadows of the original.

Several of his works appear on our list of the hundred most famous paintings of all time. Prices in this collection run from $350, depending on the size you choose. Seven sizes are listed for each work, but you can also request a custom size to match the original proportions. Optional framing is available.
