William-Adolphe Bouguereau was born in La Rochelle, France, on November 30, 1825 ¹. He became a master of Academicism, an art style that values classical beauty and perfect form. In 1839, he was sent to study for the priesthood at a Catholic college in Pons, where he learned to draw and paint from Louis Sage ¹. He later studied at the Municipal School of Drawing and Painting in Bordeaux ¹.

By March 1846, he arrived in Paris ¹. He became a student at the École des Beaux-Arts ¹. There, he studied painting under François-Édouard Picot ¹. His first major painting was Equality Before Death, which he produced in 1848 ¹.

From the Villa Medici to the Paris Salon

In September 1850, Bouguereau won a joint first prize in the Prix de Rome ¹. This prize allowed him to travel to Italy. He arrived at the Villa Medici in Rome in January 1851 ¹. While there, he completed a copy of Raphael's The Triumph of Galatea ¹. He left Rome and returned to La Rochelle in April 1854 ¹.

Back in France, his career grew quickly. Between 1854 and 1855, he decorated a pavilion in Angoulins with four large paintings representing the seasons ¹. In 1856, the French Ministry of State for Fine Arts commissioned him to paint Emperor Napoleon III Visiting the Victims of the Tarascon Flood ¹.

He bought land on the rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs in Paris in 1866 to build a grand house and studio ¹. He also bought a house and farm buildings on the rue Verdière in La Rochelle in 1882 to serve as his family's permanent summer base ¹.
