Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Titian so famous?
Titian revolutionized painting with his expressive use of color and brushwork. He trained under Giovanni Bellini. He also worked with Giorgione before securing his fame with his grand altarpiece at the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. His later, freer brush technique deeply influenced Western art.
What is Titian's most famous painting?
While he painted many masterpieces, his Venus of Urbino, now in the Uffizi gallery, is one of his most celebrated works. Other highly famous paintings include Bacchus and Ariadne in London and The Rape of Europa in Boston.
How do you pronounce the name of the artist Titian?
The name of the artist Titian is pronounced "TISH-un."
Why is red hair called Titian hair?
The term comes from the warm, reddish-gold hair color that the artist frequently painted on his female subjects.
From the Workshops of Venice to the Court of Philip II of Spain
This collection offers hand-painted oil reproductions of the legendary artist titian, whose brush defined the Venetian Renaissance. You can have any of these 194 masterworks painted for your home. Most scholars believe he was born between 1488 and 1490. 1 He was born in Pieve di Cadore. 2 He arrived in Venice around age ten to train under Sebastiano Zuccato. 2
The young painter soon entered the workshop of Giovanni Bellini, the most important studio in Venice at the time. 2 By 1508, he was working alongside Giorgione on exterior frescoes. 2 After his rival died in 1510, he began an independent career without any local rivals of his generation. 2 He also painted famous frescoes in Padua in 1511. 2
His success in Venice was secured by his famous Assumption altarpiece for the high altar of the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, displayed in 1518. 2 Between 1519 and 1526, he painted the asymmetrical Pala Pesaro, which changed Venetian altarpiece design. 2 He soon painted Bacchus and Ariadne for the Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso I d'Este, to decorate a private cabinet. 2 2
Later, he met Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who made him a Count Palatine in 1533. 2 1 He eventually became the official painter for Philip II of Spain, creating a series of mythological pictures. 2 He delivered The Rape of Europa to the king in 1562. 1 He died of the plague in 1576 and was buried in the Frari church. 2
The Evolution of the Venetian Master's Brush
Titian's style shifted from the balanced harmony of the High Renaissance to the dramatic tension of Mannerism. Mannerism is an art style that uses elongated figures and emotional compositions. You can see this shift in our collection of Mannerism and Late Renaissance art. His early work featured rich, glowing colors and clear details.
In his later years, he developed a freer brush technique with less descriptive details. 2 This loose style influenced generations of painters. You can bring this dramatic evolution into your home with a reproduction of the striking portrait Philipp II, as Prince.
Choosing Your Titian Masterpiece for Your Wall
When selecting a painting for your home, consider the mood of the room. The sensual warmth of the Venus of Urbino brings classic elegance to a bedroom. 1 For a lively living space, the energetic movement in Youth with Dogs offers a wonderful focal point.
Our studio artists paint each reproduction by hand, brushstroke by brushstroke, using oil on canvas. Prices start at $350, depending on the size you choose. Seven sizes are listed for each work, but you can request custom proportions to fit your wall perfectly.
Many of these works are counted among the hundred greatest paintings in history. Having a hand-painted reproduction allows you to appreciate the rich textures and deep colors of Venetian art every day. Select your favorite subject and size to bring a masterpiece into your home.
