The Journey of Paul Cezanne from Aix-en-Provence to Paris

Paul Cézanne was born on January 19, 1839, in Aix-en-Provence, France. 1 In 1859, Cézanne enrolled in the law faculty of the University of Aix-en-Provence at his father's request. 1 In 1860, Cézanne painted large-format murals of the four seasons on the walls of the drawing room at the Jas de Bouffan estate. 1

Cézanne moved to Paris in April 1861 after his application to the École des Beaux-Arts was turned down. 1 His early "dark" period from 1861 to 1870 was influenced by French Romanticism and early Realism. 1 Cézanne's paintings were shown in the first exhibition of the Salon des Refusés in 1863. 1

In 1872, Cézanne accepted an invitation from Camille Pissarro to work in Pontoise in the Oise Valley. 1 During his Impressionist period from 1870 to 1878, Camille Pissarro and Cézanne painted landscapes together in Pontoise and Auvers. 1 Cézanne's painting "The Hanged Man's House" was sold at the first Impressionist group exhibition in 1874. 1

In 1877, Cézanne presented 16 of his works in the third Impressionist exhibition, which was the last time he exhibited with them. 1 In 1882, Cézanne secured his first and only successful submission to the official Salon de Paris. 1 During the autumn of 1885, Cézanne stayed in Gardanne, where he produced paintings that anticipated the cubist style. 1

On April 28, 1886, Paul Cézanne and Hortense Fiquet were married in Aix. 1 In 1890, Cézanne developed diabetes, making it harder to deal with others. 1 Ambroise Vollard opened Cézanne's first solo exhibition in November 1895. 1 In 1897, Cézanne's landscape "The Mill on the Couleuvre near Pontoise" was purchased for the Berlin National Gallery. 1

Maurice Denis's 1900 painting "Hommage à Cézanne" is currently located in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. 1 In 1902, Cézanne had his studio built north of Aix-en-Provence along the Chemin des Lauves. 1 In 1903, Cézanne exhibited for the first time at the newly established Salon d'Automne. 1 Cézanne's final painting before his death was "Portrait of the Gardener Vallier," painted in 1906. 1

Selecting Your Cezanne Art for Your Home

When choosing cezanne art for your home, consider how his unique brushwork and structured compositions interact with your room's light. Our hand-painted oil reproduction of Bend in Forest Road brings a rich, structural forest scene into your living space, showing his early steps toward Cubism.

If you prefer cooler tones, the deep, atmospheric blues of Blue Landscape offer a serene focal point for a bedroom. For a deeply personal piece, the Portrait of the Gardener Vallier captures the quiet dignity of the artist's final subject. 1
