While in France, he began the early composition of his most famous work, the Declaration of Independence, with help from Thomas Jefferson. ¹ When planning this smaller painting in 1786, Trumbull chose to preserve the images of the founders rather than make a completely accurate scene. ² Some architectural features in the painting are inaccurate because they were based on a sketch Thomas Jefferson drew from memory in Paris. ²
