Frequently Asked Questions

Was Ivan Aivazovsky Russian or Ukrainian?

Ivan Aivazovsky was born to Armenian parents in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea. He spent much of his life in the Russian Empire, studying in Saint Petersburg and serving as the official painter of the Russian Navy. Today, his heritage is celebrated across Armenia, Ukraine, and Russia, with his works held in major museums in all three nations.

What is Ivan Aivazovsky's most famous painting?

While he created around 6,000 paintings during his career, his most famous masterpiece is The Ninth Wave. Other highly sought-after works include Ocean and Figures In A Coastal Landscape At Sunset.

The Sea of Ivan Aivazovsky on Your Wall

This collection brings the dramatic, glowing seascapes of Ivan Aivazovsky into your home as hand-painted oil reproductions. Each piece is painted brushstroke by brushstroke on museum-grade linen by a studio artist. If you love the wild energy of the ocean, these works offer a window into a world of light and water.

Unlike other artists of his era, Ivan Aivazovsky never painted his pictures from nature, choosing instead to paint them from memory far from the seaboard 1. This technique allowed him to create idealized, emotional scenes. You can see this poetic light in Figures In A Coastal Landscape At Sunset and the deep, rolling waves of Ocean. He also captured land, as seen in The Caucasus.

From Feodosia to Saint Petersburg: A Life of Light

Ivan Aivazovsky was born to Armenian parents in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea 1. After studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, Aivazovsky lived briefly in Italy in the early 1840s 1. In October 1837, Aivazovsky graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts with a gold medal, two years ahead of schedule 1.

Upon returning to Russia, Aivazovsky was appointed the main painter of the Russian Navy 1. In 1844, he became the official artist of the Navy to paint seascapes and naval battles 1. Over his nearly 60-year career, Aivazovsky created around 6,000 paintings 1. Pope Gregory XVI even awarded him a golden medal in Europe 1.

In 1845, Aivazovsky settled in Feodosia, where he built a house and studio 1. In 1880, he opened an art gallery in his home, which became the third museum in the Russian Empire 1. During his last two decades, he created a series of silver-toned seascapes 1. Most of his paintings are kept in museums and private collections 1.

Selecting the Perfect Sea and Size for Your Room

When choosing a piece for your home, consider how the light will interact with the oil paint. Prices in this collection start at $350, depending on the size you select. Seven sizes are listed for each work, but you can easily specify your own dimensions on our special order page to match the original proportions.

If you love these dramatic seascapes, you might also enjoy the Romantic movement. His work shares a deep emotional power with the seascapes of J.M.W. Turner and Francisco Goya's paintings. Several of his masterpieces are featured in our guide to the most famous artworks and our list of the most iconic paintings ever created.
