From Cedar Rapids to the Heart of Regionalism

Grant Wood was an American artist who became famous for painting the rural Midwest. ¹ Before finding his signature style, he taught art to junior high school students in Cedar Rapids from 1919 to 1925. ¹ He later lived and worked in a converted carriage house hayloft in Cedar Rapids, known as "5 Turner Alley," between 1924 and 1935. ¹

During the 1920s, Wood made four trips to Europe to study different painting styles. ¹ He studied Impressionism and post-Impressionism before a trip to Munich, Germany, in 1928 changed his direction. ²¹ There, he saw Northern Renaissance art, which inspired him to paint in a highly detailed, tightly controlled style. ²

Wood returned to Iowa and painted Woman with Plants in 1929. ¹ He soon helped found the Stone City Art Colony in 1932 to support artists during the Great Depression. ¹ He also became the Director of a Public Works of Art Project in Iowa City in 1934. ¹ That same year, the University of Iowa hired him as an Associate Professor of Fine Art. ¹ He taught painting at the university's School of Art until 1941. ¹ Wood died of pancreatic cancer in Iowa City on February 12, 1942. ¹

The Stories Behind American Gothic and Other Works

The background of the painting features a Gothic Revival cottage in Eldon, southern Iowa. ¹ Wood's sister, Nan, and his dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby, modeled as the famous couple. ¹ The painting was first shown at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it remains today. ¹

Other works in this collection show Wood's deep connection to the land. His early Regionalist paintings, like Young Corn, show the rolling hills of the Midwest. ³ He also painted Plaid Sweater in 1931, capturing a simple portrait of youth. ¹ In 1934, he painted Dinner for Threshers, showing a busy farm kitchen. ¹ He later painted Death on the Ridge Road in 1935, which shows a dramatic car scene. ³
