Frequently Asked Questions
What was El Greco's art style?
El Greco painted in the Mannerism Late Renaissance style, which favored expressive, elongated figures over realistic proportions. He trained as a Byzantine icon painter in Crete before moving to Venice, where he was described as a disciple of Titian. He believed that color was more important than form in painting.
Why is El Greco so famous?
He is famous for his highly original style that rejected natural laws in favor of intense emotion and dramatic color. Although later generations disdained his work because it opposed early baroque principles, modern artists rediscovered his genius. His expressive style even inspired modern masters like Pablo Picasso.
What is El Greco's most famous painting from Toledo?
His most famous landscape of the city is View of Toledo, which is one of only two surviving landscapes he painted of his home. He also received a major commission in March 1586 to paint The Burial of the Count of Orgaz for a local church. You can find these and other celebrated historical canvases in our collection.
The El Greco Artwork Collection
This collection brings 134 of El Greco's dramatic paintings to your home as hand-painted oil reproductions. These works belong to the Mannerism Late Renaissance style, a movement known for its emotional tension and artificial elegance. Each piece is painted brushstroke by brushstroke in oil on canvas.
El Greco believed that color was the most important element of painting and had primacy over form. 1 He preferred exceptionally tall and slender figures, often disregarding the laws of nature to elongate his compositions. 1 This unique style makes his el greco artwork stand out on any wall.
From Byzantine Candia to the Light of Toledo
Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco, was born in 1541 in either Fodele or Candia on Crete. 1 He trained as an icon painter of the Cretan school. 1 Icons are sacred religious paintings created in the flat Byzantine style. By 1563, he was a master of the painters' guild in Candia. 1
He moved to Venice around 1567 to pursue his career. 1 There, he was described as a disciple of the renowned artist Titian. 1 This Venetian period introduced him to rich colors. In 1570, he relocated to Rome and produced works influenced by his time in Venice. 1
In Rome, he stayed at the Palazzo Farnese as a guest of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. 1 He established his own workshop there at the end of 1572. 1 He moved to Spain in 1577, settling in Toledo where he created his mature masterpieces. 1
His first Spanish commission was for the church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo. 1 King Philip II of Spain did not like his work and refused to give him more commissions. 1 In Toledo, he received major commissions and produced his most famous paintings. 1
Choosing Your Masterpiece from Toledo
You might start with View of Toledo, which is one of only two surviving landscapes of the city that he painted. 1 This dramatic landscape captures the city under a dark, swirling sky. It is a powerful choice for a living room or study.
Another famous option is Opening of the fifth seal (The vision of Saint John the Divine). This painting is believed to have inspired Pablo Picasso's masterpiece Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. 1 The expressive, elongated figures create an intense energy that commands attention.
For a quieter space, consider the Portrait of Jeronimo de Cevallos. This work shows his mastery of portraiture, capturing the deep character of his subject with subtle tones. It brings a sense of history and quiet contemplation to a library or office.
