From Copenhagen to Rome: The Life of Carl Bloch
This collection offers hand-painted oil reproductions of the works of Danish painter Carl Bloch, allowing you to bring his dramatic light and emotional depth into your home. Carl Bloch was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 23, 1834. 1 His parents wanted him to become a Navy officer, but his only interest was drawing and painting. 1 He began his career as a painter at the age of 15. 2
Bloch studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art under Wilhelm Marstrand. 1 He was elected to the Danish Royal Academy at the age of 31. 2 Bloch went to Italy to study art and passed through the Netherlands, where he was influenced by Rembrandt. 1 He lived in Italy from 1859 to 1866, which helped him develop his historical style. 1 He met his wife, Alma Trepka, in Rome and married her there on May 31, 1868. 1
From Everyday Realism to Sacred Academicism
Bloch's early work featured rural scenes from everyday life. 1 You can see this in his Realist paintings, which capture quiet, ordinary moments. Realism is an art style that shows subjects exactly as they look in real life, without making them perfect. This style also shaped other masters, and you can explore similar themes in canvases by Jean-Francois Millet.
Bloch's first great success was the exhibition of his 1864 painting Prometheus Unbound in Copenhagen in 1865. 1 Later, he focused on Academicism, a style that follows classical rules of beauty and drama. This approach made his religious works deeply moving. For example, A Young Woman Knocking at the Fisherman’s Window shows his incredible ability to paint soft, natural light and human emotion.
The Sacred Commissions of Frederiksborg Castle
Bloch was commissioned to paint twenty-three scenes from the life of Christ for the King's Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød. 1 The original paintings for Frederiksborg Castle were painted between 1865 and 1879 and are still located there. 1 These works became some of the most famous pictures in Danish history.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has heavily used Bloch's paintings for over forty years. 1 The Brigham Young University Museum of Art in Provo, Utah, acquired Bloch's painting Christ Healing at the Pool of Bethesda. 1 BYU also purchased an 1880 grisaille version of The Mocking of Christ in June 2015. 1
Among these, The Baptism of Christ stands out for its brilliant use of color and divine light. Bloch's altarpieces can be found in Denmark, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands. 1 After Marstrand died, Bloch finished decorating the ceremonial hall at the University of Copenhagen. 1 Bloch created more than 250 paintings during his career. 2 He died of cancer on February 22, 1890. 1
