From Feodosia to Saint Petersburg: A Life of Light

Ivan Aivazovsky was born to Armenian parents in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea ¹. After studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, Aivazovsky lived briefly in Italy in the early 1840s ¹. In October 1837, Aivazovsky graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts with a gold medal, two years ahead of schedule ¹.

Upon returning to Russia, Aivazovsky was appointed the main painter of the Russian Navy ¹. In 1844, he became the official artist of the Navy to paint seascapes and naval battles ¹. Over his nearly 60-year career, Aivazovsky created around 6,000 paintings ¹. Pope Gregory XVI even awarded him a golden medal in Europe ¹.

In 1845, Aivazovsky settled in Feodosia, where he built a house and studio ¹. In 1880, he opened an art gallery in his home, which became the third museum in the Russian Empire ¹. During his last two decades, he created a series of silver-toned seascapes ¹. Most of his paintings are kept in museums and private collections ¹.
