From Sudbury to London: The Rise of Thomas Gainsborough
This collection features hand-painted oil reproductions of works by thomas gainsborough that you can have painted for your own home. His journey began in Sudbury, Suffolk, where he was born 1. He left home in 1740 to study art in London under the engraver Hubert Gravelot 1.
In 1746, he married Margaret Burr, an illegitimate daughter of the 3rd Duke of Beaufort 1. He returned to Sudbury in 1748–1749 and concentrated on painting portraits 1. These early years shaped his unique approach to capturing English faces and quiet country settings.
The Bath and London Years: 1759 to 1788
In 1759, the artist and his family moved to Bath, living at number 17 The Circus 1. He became a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1769 1. However, he stopped exhibiting his paintings there in 1773 1. He then moved to London in 1774, living in Schomberg House, Pall Mall 1.
He began to exhibit at the Royal Academy again in 1777 1. During these decades, he developed a style of portrait where he integrated the sitter into the landscape 1. Choosing a Gainsborough Masterpiece for Your Home
When choosing a piece for your wall, consider how his light and color can open up a room. You might start with his famous portrait of William Poyntz of Midgham and his Dog Amber. This work beautifully blends the soft, playful tones of Rococo art with a deep forest background, a style also shared by French masters like Jean-Honore Fragonard.
If you prefer coastal scenes, Seashore with Fishermen offers a dramatic view of the sea. It captures the wild, natural light that made his landscapes famous and brings a sense of movement to your wall. The composition draws your eye directly into the crashing waves of this coastal masterpiece.
For a touch of high-society elegance, Lady Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire is a stunning option. This portrait, painted in 1787, is kept at Chatsworth House 1. It shows his incredible skill at painting fine fabrics and expressive faces in this grand portrait.
Sizing a Gainsborough Landscape for Your Wall
Many of these works are featured among the famous paintings of the era. You can also find them on the list of the hundred most famous paintings of all time. A larger canvas allows the delicate brushwork of his landscapes to truly shine on your wall.
