The Florence Years and the Guild of Saint Luke

Leonardo da Vinci began his artistic journey in Florence, where he was educated by the Italian painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio ¹. He qualified as a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1472 at the age of 20 ¹. Between 1472 and 1475, Leonardo collaborated with Verrocchio on The Baptism of Christ ¹. In January 1478, Leonardo received an independent commission to paint an altarpiece for the Chapel of Saint Bernard in the Palazzo della Signoria ¹. Working in Milan and the Court of Ludovico Sforza

Leonardo worked in Milan from 1482 until 1499 ¹. During this highly productive period, he painted several portraits for the court. His portrait Lady with an Ermine is presumed to depict Cecilia Gallerani, the lover of Ludovico Sforza ¹. This delicate work is now housed in the Czartoryski Museum in Kraków, Poland ¹.

In 1500, Leonardo fled Milan for Venice after Ludovico Sforza was overthrown by France ¹. In Venice, he was employed as a military architect and engineer to devise methods to defend the city from naval attack ¹. By October 1503, Leonardo had begun working on a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo, the model for the Mona Lisa ¹. From Rome to the French Court of King Francis I

In 1506, Leonardo was summoned back to Milan by Charles II d'Amboise, the acting French governor of the city ¹. During his career, he also prepared a study for Leda and the Swan, which is located at Chatsworth House in England ¹. He went to Rome in September 1513, where he was received by Giuliano de' Medici ¹. From September 1513 to 1516, Leonardo spent much of his time living in the Belvedere Courtyard in the Apostolic Palace in Rome ¹.

Leonardo entered the service of King Francis I of France in 1516 and was given the use of the manor house Clos Lucé ¹. His late painting Saint John the Baptist is located in the Louvre ¹. Another of his late masterpieces, The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, is also located in the Louvre in Paris ¹.
