Seurat spent 1883 working on his first major painting, "Bathers at Asnières." ¹ This massive work showed working-class men relaxing by the river. However, the Paris Salon rejected "Bathers at Asnières," so Seurat showed it at the Groupe des Artistes Indépendants in May 1884. ¹

This rejection pushed him to find new ways to show his work. Seurat helped set up the Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1884. ¹ This group allowed artists to exhibit without a jury, giving rise to the Neo Impressionism style. [nh] Through this group, Seurat and his peers bypassed the conservative Salon and brought their vibrant, light-filled visions directly to the public.

Masterpieces of Light, Movement, and the Circus

Seurat's work captured both quiet landscapes and the bustling energy of Parisian entertainment. His large painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" started the Neo-Impressionist movement. ¹ This masterpiece was shown for the first time at the Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1886. ¹ Seurat made about 60 preparatory studies for "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." ¹ Today, the final painting is kept in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. ¹

Later in his short career, Seurat turned his attention to the energy of the stage and the ring. He showed Le Chahut and "Jeune femme se poudrant" at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1890. ¹ The writer André Salmon called Seurat's painting Le Chahut one of the great icons of the new devotion. ¹ Today, this famous work is owned by the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. ¹ Seurat's last ambitious work, "The Circus," was left unfinished when he died in 1891. ¹
